Tentative Schedule

Here's an update on my tentative schedule:
I am currently in Chicago until tomorrow, Wedn Dec 9th. Ill fly into Minneapolis and spend the rest of December in Iowa between my parents, grandparents and sister's house. January should include a trip to St Croix to pack up and say goodbyes. Also will be doing some fundraising, and preparing to move to Australia. Lord willing, by the end of January, I will be moving to Island Breeze Brisbane to become staff and work primarily in Community outreach. Thanks for your support!
Praise the Lord for traveling mercies....

Chicago

My godsons, Josiah and Jayden meeting me at the airport! Their hugs are the BEST FIRST THING to do back home- HUGSSSS.

Made it back into Chicago safe and sound, a little tired and jetlagged. There is something special about flying over chicago at night... maybe something sentimental in me. Walking out of the plane into the waiting stands for Chicago style hotdogs, italian beef sandwitches or Nuts on Clark. It is COLD here... and Im not used to it. I could see my breath the first time I stepped outside the doors and was thankful my friend Jenny and the boys brought my winter coat with them. Went to my church, the Vineyard, this morning and heard a wonderful message about the value of 'waiting' and that we should push ourselves past asking god 'what do i need, what am i waiting for' to asking Him 'what do i REALLY need and what am I REALLY waiting for'. For example if you are praying/waiting for a new job- what you REALLY are waiting for is financial provision, security, freedom from worry etc... Was a great message and received encouraging prayer afterwards. I also got to reconnect with good friends and those I claim as 'family'. Its feeling a bit more like Christmas with everyone's outside lights on an the cold. Need to get back to being used to pennies, and american football (the vikings on right now). Very different from Rugby. Glad to be home!

Last lunch in Brisbane

My last lunch at Island Breeze... Jerry, Metui and Jason as well as Amy and I sat around in a circle eating watermelon and sausages.... will miss the 'go with the flow' attitude of life here. Exciting about future opportunities to connect with the community and build relationships here. My main prayer request right now is for airfare money to return, as well as continued health, favor with visas and money for a car. This afternoon we are going on a staff picnic which will be fun! Enjoying the heat while I can, before cold Chicago hits.

One more week

Countdown until I head back to the Midwest for the holidays! I have one more week here before I leave. I will certainly miss the people here and already am sad that December holds one wedding, two fundraisers and a Christmas party that I'll be gone for.
Last night was another 'youth' night with the local high school students at the beach. God opens some opportunities for more in depth conversations with a few of the girls and it makes me excited about returning and being able to more fully poor into them. Lack of support system seems to be a theme with many of these girls coming from broken families. How tainted their worldview must be to have lost trust and innocence at such young ages. Praise God for opportunities to touch lives, encourage and give hope.
Tonight is a culture diversity night at one of our local churches and is intended to reach out to their community as well as unit with three other churches. It will be a good 'feast' as they say but also a good time of reaching out and letting Christ be known.
Many blessings on this Thanksgiving season! No thankgiving here but hopefully the two other americans on campus and I will be able to put together a dinner on Monday. Lots to be thankful for this year!

Big Time Changes

1 Timothy 1:12 "I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me
strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his
service."

I have been at the YWAM Brisbane base for one month and am looking
forward to my last three weeks here. Currently our DTS (discipleship
training school) has joined with three others (Sydney and Melbourne)
in Sydney and I had the opportunity to jump on a plane and head to
Sydney. It has been good traveling the train system, and meeting other
inspired and passionate christians. Tomorrow I should be meeting up
with mentors of mine from my Leadership training in St Croix, the
West. I do however miss the team at Island Breeze Brisbane which is a
confirmation to me of some of the things God has been speaking to me
about recently.
Last week I made the difficult decision to not return as staff to YWAM
St Croix. This came after some prayer and fasting, seeking God's
vision and also being in contact with the base director. The base
continues to go through transitions and will not be running the
programs I was previously involved in. In His grace, God has allowed
me to see many opportunities to serve here in Brisbane and I feel
called here for my next season in life, remaining with Youth with a
Mission. I would be working primarily in the community outreach team
which is where my heart lies- interaction with the people- and also
some support for the DTS team. I will be still returning to the
midwest for the Christmas holidays and for some fundraising. God is so
faithful, that can be the only theme of my current season, He remains
faithful even in the toughest and most confusing of times. Not because
He has to, but because He WANTS to as He delights in His children.
Please let me know of any other questions you may have. I continuously
thank God for your prayers for me along the way..... Alissa

island food

We had the lovo yesterday, underground oven (thats the fijian term - the samoans call it the Umu). We of course had pork as well as casava and had pulisami -taro leaves with coconut, onion and cornbeef. It's actually one of my favorites from samoa, although I prefer the sweeter type with just the coconut and onion. It was 'interesting' for the non-islanders because they started to feel their throats itch and one American thought she was having an allergic reaction .Others started getting up for water, or clearing their throats. It seemed normal to me, just shows the taro leaf was either picked to early or not boiled enough so it was so funny for us 'natives' to see one after the other start coughing or complaining, or getting concerned. Joshua, an aussie, was rebuking the spirit of sickness thinking he was getting a sore throat. Oh i laugh just thinking about it...The cultural differences can be frustrating at times but overall it shows God's sense of humor. For example, yesterday the guy from Papua New Guinea went up to Liti's room and instead of taking his fist and actually knocking on her door, he simply yelled out the words 'Knock Knock' numerous times. You can't help but laugh... I'm sure it brings joy to God's heart too...
I made an "american" dinner tonite- spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread and a great salad (great because I was in charge of it so added as many tomatoes, carrots and cucumber as I could!). Most of the boys had gone with the director to help Pastor Tonga prepare the Aboriginal church the Gospel Country Music Festival happening this weekend. Left over food won't last long though, especially since this morning was fasting time. Half way through the week! My time here is flying by and I pray God continues to move amazingly in my last month here....

Aussie land

The aussie's have a funny way of abbreviating everything. Sunglasses become sunnies, footie refers to a football, aircon is airconditioning etc.... They also have a uniform in the public school system that includes a hat. I guess the sun is pretty vicious and they have a lot of skin cancer so its become a requirement. Kids can get into big trouble for not wearing their hat. It makes me laugh, would our independent America be okay with the school system telling us how to dress and how to protect ourselves against the environment? I'm not so sure. Thursday night I went to the local mall and entered into the familiar 'Target' store. When checking out they asked if I wanted a ten cent bag. There was no other options. I'm all for the 'ecofriendly' system and often carry my own bag when shopping but also had to laugh at the fact that they would not be providing a bag for my purchases.... Has this hit America yet? The mall was swarming with young kids. There was a 'brawl' up near the entrance about one hour before the mall was to close. Apparently this is a normal occurrence , both for kids to fight at the mall but also just for kids to fight! At a youth gathering last night I spoke to a couple of the local girls and they were talking about how if you are one city and known to be from another high school you can easily get jumped, especially the boys. Its a part of their 'normal' life... so sad! Tonite I am heading down the red light district of Brisbane, called the Valley. There is an outreach that goes down there every Saturday evening until 3 am and they are making a big impact on people through evangelism and encouragement. It will be interesting to see and am praying for protection along the way.
New goal for when I return to the States- get an international driver's license. That way I don't have to worry about it whenever I travel or do any outreaches....

Rugby weekend

Kara, Maggie, myself and Liti with our new rugby jerseys to support the Island Breeze boys
Travelled with the Island Breeze team to Bryon Bay this weekend. Tournament started on Saturday with a full day of games (only lost one) and then finished up on Sunday (we lost in the semi-finals). Our boys played well for the most part, better on Sunday than Saturday. We stayed in a church- all on the floor but no one seems to mind. It was good fellowship. I tend to get nervous now watching rugby. Its easier for me to watch a game with no one I know, because then I just enjoy the good plays. But with the boys I know I get worried they are going to get hurt. Rugby is tough man. I see american football in a whole new light.
I did get to the most eastern point, near the light house. It was closed so we stood and looked at the shoreline and beach. Sometimes I forget Australia is actually a HUGE island! I also snuck away Sunday morning before the first match and spent some time on the beach. Very touristy area but also fun. Was a good weekend to make new friends, and support our boys with something they are passionate about.

Go Island Breeze Rugby Team

Good job to the island breeze rugby team who made it to the semi-finals. (with no major injuries!)

families

Typical Samoan response:

Me: So does your American fiancee have a large family?

Samoan: No, only five sisters

HA! That coming from our 2 kids one dog average !

Byron Bay

This weekend is rugby weekend! The boys are playing in a tournament Saturday and Sunday in Byron Bay. I've been through there last time I was in Australia but this should be good- to see a little more of the area. Plus we are all sleeping over on the church floor! Feels like outreach.... I've heard that it's the most eastern point for Australia in New South Wales. The town has a population of 9000 individuals. They advertise some beaches and light houses... Ill bring my camera for this trip!

Fines

So just for anyone's future reference: you can be fined two hundred dollars for being on the train without the proper ticket... YES there is a story (with a grace ending), and no I won't share it ... let's just say don't trust fijians. HA!

Monies

Australian money- they round their bills. At first I thought this was a brilliant idea-no pennies! I wonder if someone has done a study to see if we really break even. BUT then I realized that their 20 cent pieces are as big as Canadian loonies and heavy! I would break my wallet/purse if I kept my change in there. I certainly feel like a tourist, squinting to see if its a one dollar coin or a two dollar coin even though they aren't the same size. So I just make sure to slip in my disclaimer : Im from Chicago.....

DUST

Dust Storm today!

Feeling it in my dry throat and sinuses... don't notice it much except getting on the highway it looks hazy from afar....

Wonder how the kangaroo feel about it?

Food for thought

Some of my favorite Island Foods from this week:

ChopSuey
Baked Bean sandwitch (yes, bread cheese and baked beans together)
Sausage, and Pumpkin soup

Hmmm thank God for the blessings....Alissa

Samoa outreach

Greetings from Island Breeze Brisbane, YWAM!

I arrived to Island Breeze Brisbane last week and was warmly welcomed
by old friends and new ones. This base is made up primarily of
individuals from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, and the Philippines. It
has been a relaxing visit and a reconnection with the island food and
lifestyle.
I have some exciting new endeavors on the horizon for my time here in
Brisbane. God has opened some incredible doors to be included as part
of the team while I'm here. I've been asked to be a part of the team
organizing an event called 'Save Samoa' which will include a concert
in the city, with the purpose of raising funds for the survivors of
the tsunami in Samoa. The YWAM base in Samoa, in coordination with the
Red Cross, has been involved in supporting the rebuilding and
encouragement of those who have lost property, and family. The need
continues and Island Breeze Brisbane, aside from hosting this
fundraising event, will also be sending a container of supplies and a
team from this base. The funds and donations raised from the November
14th event will go directly to YWAM Samoa to be distributed to those
who are hardest to reach. We have heard concerns regarding some of the
support supplies and money being held by churches or 'matai' (chiefs)
and not reaching the people with the most need which is why we are
relying on the Red Cross to guide us and also sending our own team. My
role in preparation for the November 14th event here in Brisbane is
primarily communication, writing letters requesting donations etc.. It
is a challenge but also a blessings to be a part of something so big.
Please be praying for us as we tread unknown waters and seek God in
faith for all to come together for such a big event.
I've also been included on the list of individuals from this base
returning to Samoa on November 7th. The main players of this group are
experienced singers and dancers and will be touring. We also have
heard of the great need for crisis counselor/spiritual support and
hope to fill this role also. Our team will be in Samoa for one week
and the cost of round trip ticket is 800 dollars. I know with
certainty that God wants me to be included in this team, and feel
honored at the opportunity. I am waiting on God to provide the funds
to pay for my ticket and would like you to consider donating to this
need. Every day God shows me how much the need on the mission field
is, and humbles me in realizing that He's chosen me to be a part of
something He is designing.
Even though these projects are now on my heart, I am also feeling God
use this time for rest and some good studying/reading time.
Reconnecting with God's truths in my life and reviewing how He's
working in my life to trim out the bad and allow more room for the
holy…. Please let me know if you would like to donate to my ticket,
allowing me to serve those in need in Samoa. GOD BLESS and on behalf
of the 'islanders', I thank you for your support…. ~Alissa

Island Breeze Australia

I've made it safely to Australia. The plane rides were long but no major delays. I'm currently staying at Island Breeze YWAM base in Brisbane, the location that I did my outreach two years ago with YWAM. I've been enjoying catching up with old friends and making new ones. The base staff are almost all of island background (Fiji, Tonga, PNG, Samoa)....It feels like home! Currently I am helping prepare for a fundraising event and concert scheduled for November 14th called 'Save Samoa'. I've been preparing letters requesting donations and performers for the event. It's nice to be able to help out on the base while I stay here. The base is nice, kangaroos roam free and I've seen one koala in the tree so far. Australia is always fun because everything seems so 'familiar' and yet I can walk into the mall and not recognize one store. I'm adapting to the few word differences such as 'trolley' instead of shopping cart, 'lolli' instead of candy, 'mobile' instead of cell phone, and phrases such as 'full on' and 'good day'..... Thanks for all the prayers ! I will try and get a few pictures to post sometime next week! God is good, all the time....

Heading to Australia!

After a nice break here in the midwest I am leaving tomorrow for the YWAM Brisbane Australia base. I will be so excited to touch base with those I met during my DTS outreach, and also make new friends. My flight will be long- the longest is 12 hours between LA and Auckland New Zealand. Who invented such long flights? Hmm I suppose the vast ocean had something to do with it! I will be spending just one day in the Chicago before I fly out, not enough time to catch up with everyone but I hope to be back around Christmas time. Continue to pray for the transitions going on in St Croix.... Here we go on another adventure!!

Back in Iowa

I am back in Iowa for a few weeks before heading to Australia. Enjoying time resting, and spending time with family. Mom and I have been for a few walks around the lake, or in the woods... not quite like going to the beach but I enjoyed the nature!

Was nice to be home during Dad's birthday! We are enjoying his present of candy...

Isaiah 58

These verses have really been impressed upon me lately. Focusing on staying close to God's heart, and not just acting out of habit, or what we expect....

Isaiah 58

True Fasting
1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the house of Jacob their sins.

 2 For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it?
       Why have we humbled ourselves,
       and you have not noticed?'
"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
       and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
       to set the oppressed free
       and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
       and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness [a] will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

 9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.

 11 The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
       and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
       and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
       Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath
and from doing as you please on my holy day,
if you call the Sabbath a delight
and the LORD's holy day honorable,
and if you honor it by not going your own way
and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

14 then you will find your joy in the LORD,
and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land
and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob."
The mouth of the LORD has spoken

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." -- John 14:27

Update on next few months plans

Greetings,

My update is that I've taken a few months off, and recently flew back to the Midwest to spend a few weeks with family. The decision to leave YWAM St Croix for a bit was difficult but God was faithful in giving confirmations to me. One of them was a decision made by base leaders to set aside the community outreach for the next few months. Since we are not running any schools right now it was a good time to get away for some rest, restoration and some debriefing. After the next few weeks in Iowa and Chicago, I will be heading to Brisbane, Australia for at least one month. During this time I will be mentored by the base directors and am looking forward to returning since this is where I did my outreach in 2007. Prayer requests are for continued rest, and for travel/financial plans. Since I am planning on returning to St Croix you can continue to send your financial support to their office or you can send it to my permanent address (my parents!) at:

Alissa Kennedy

2798 130th Drive

Belmond, IA 50421

Thank you so much for your prayers!

Transition prayers

Dear supporters,

I am asking for a prayer request regarding decisions made to stay in
St Croix, or take some time off. Since our intruders on the base I
have been having some difficulty with my sleeping and some fear. My
director has granted me permission to leave for a while and rest so
that I can be more efficient when I return. I struggle with the
thought of leaving the 'team' but also realize we do not have any
major outreaches/schools running the next couple of months. Please
join me in praying for God's wisdom on how to use my time, and how to
care for myself while still serving the island of St Croix and the
YWAM base.
Thank you ! ~Alissa

Tuesday's update -Breakins

Supporters,
I want to first thank you so much for your ongoing prayers. We had
another attempted breakin a few days ago when, while I was sleeping,
someone attempted to break in through my screen window, waking me up.
We managed to be safe and were amazed that the thieves returned again
last night. We had placed an alarm on one of our buildings which
allowed our boys to get a running start (the thieves are bold, it was
about 9pm and we were still standing in the courtyard). One of the
thieves literally ran out of his shoes and the boys were able to get a
general description. We are pleased with the quick police response
during this breakin (typically the island police are understaffed and
take up to an hour to respond). The ladies are currently sleeping off
the base until we are more secured. We see this as an ongoing issue
but press in as we are coming off a month of children's ministries and
seeking further community involvement and are assured God's vision for
this island is to bring freedom. We at Youth with a Mission St Croix
thank you for your prayers of protection and covering, as well as for
discernment as we secure our fenceline, get a dog, and do nightly
rounds. Also please pray for us as staff to remain united, and
supported and also for our level of physical energy as our sleep has
been minimal. We thank St Croix Christian Church for their support.
Also we praise God that the hurricane is now scheduled north of our
small island.
God bless, Alissa

Thanks boys for the extra hours and sweat put into protecting us!

Prayer Request

PRAYER REQUEST:
We just had two break ins this week by a very bold intruder-stopping at the snack bar to steal money and drink coke, and then entering our home even though someone was there! We had one Tuesday night, while I was in the house only ten feet away. I was in my room listening to music, door open and light on and he was in the kitchen so I didn't see him but could hear him. We
had a break in on Saturday in the boys dorm where one was sleeping and the other was
away house sitting and the man stole the seconds laptop and camera around three am. Last night it was 10pm and my roommate's laptop was on the kitchen table. He popped both the kitchen window as well as her bedroom window to get her charger (which means he had probably been watching us). He also took a book bag with two cameras in it. How frustrating when we as missionaries have so little, to have it be taken. We are praying that God moves in this man's life and that some conviction will lead him back to us and back to God- what an awesome testimony that would be! As for me I was shaken up, a bit still, just knowing how close it was. I heard some things but thought
perhaps it was my roommate coming home but when I heard the door I got up to check, and it wasn't her- i immediately noticed the laptop gone so called her to see if she had grabbed it. When I found out she hadn't I locked myself in my room and called a male staff who came running. The police did get some good fingerprints out of this second break in so lord willing that will be enough. In the meantime we girls have moved to a safer house on campus, and the boys have put up extra
fence, the church here donated more lights and we are talking about getting a dog. Please continue to pray for this base as it appears to be under such spiritual attack right now, especially after having run such an impactful July of kids camps ~ Blessings

A few 'happenings' at YWAM St Croix....

The men pouring cement during Kings Kids - what a time consuming job! Its over our 'shop' and we hope to build a second level for housing....

Thanks to all the guys from Puerto Rico and YWAM St Croix base who helped!

Annie and I after her baby shower!! We are excited for baby boy Finn to join the YWAM ST Croix base in a few months.

A few more pictures from our half day christian camp here at the YWAM St Croix base. The first is a pool picture with our older kids. Im sitting on the far right with my feet in the pool (yes I can still save lives from that angle). The second picture is game time, baseball.

Some more pictures from Jericho kids- the next two pictures are from craft time. The picture one the bottom is our group shot from last week with the kids, YWAM Staff and the volunteer high school group from PA.

Kids helping get water balloons ready for Jericho Kids in the morning. You can see me in the background right getting the pool ready and our beautiful sugar mill in the background. David is a volunteer from WA here for two weeks with his wonderful wife Kathy and daughter Lacey (thanks for the great treats!). They've been an encouragement to all the staff during their time here.

Eager kids from Jericho kids arrive in the morning (photo left). Seems to be creeping earlier and earlier each morning actually!

One of the stations is the pool (where I am lifeguarding). The bottom photo are Jericho kids and volunteers from PA. THANKS VOLUNTEERS!

Lifeguard days

So I am officially the pool girl. Joked about cleaning the pool before I came and now I do! For Jericho kids, our summer kids program, I am cleaning the pool and watching that children don't drown. We have strong swimmers so Im not concerned about it and even jump in a play from time to time. Who could ask for more? Last night we had a worship night with the high school group that is here from Pennsylvania. They are a great group of energetic young ones and I have yet to hear a complaint despite the fact that we have them hacking weeds in 90 degree heat. They do get some breaks to visit the island. The kids are amazing. They are learning Bible verses, getting to know each other, participating in everything we ask them to. A few interesting interactions between some of the older kids based purely on which apartment project they are from. So sad that this type of division starts so early. So far everyone seems fairly healthy and we are keeping a close eye on everyone including us running the camp.
Took a trip to Kmart last week wanting a few things, toothpaste, a comb, microwave popcorn... So I walk down the toothpaste aisle and think maybe I turned too soon. Empty shelves lined the entire aisle. Well, no, theres the toothbrushes so this must be the right place. Not ONE box of toothpaste in the joint. Only crest white strips which would not impress my roomates who would have to put up with my morning breath. Shrug it off to the islands. I turn into the hair aisle and walk past the brushes. Again empty racks where the combs usually are. Did they get my list ahead of time and take them all off the shelves? Turn to the food aisle and pick up peanut butter and realize there is no popcorn. *Sigh* Fourth of July weekend, beginning of food stamps, delayed deliveries...all reasonable explanations. Went to Kmart again today figuring the end of the week may be better- and finally- one lonely section of Colgate toothpaste. YEA! Bought some hurrican supplies (I am actually weeks late in doing this)... just some batteries, matches, container to hold valuables... I guess Im offically an islander if I have hurricane supplies sitting under my shelf!
Some of the staff took some pictures of Jericho kids so I will have to see if I can borrow some pictures to share with you guys....

Fourth of July weekend

Today I was able to visit the most eastern point of the United States. Its a little look out point called Point Udall. We have a team of about 25 high school students here from Pennsylvania and they are helping with our children's program this week. We hosted an 'island tour' (I had to drive) so we stopped at Grassy Point, Point Udall and ended at Cane Bay beach. There were quite a few people at the beach celebrating the 4th of July. We might try to make it to Fredriksted pier to watch fireworks. I heard there is a boat parade but haven't heard of any other parades. It's not celebrated as much as the midwest does.
I met some interesting people at the beach today. One man named Ray who grew up on the island but is of spanish decent. He said he is a 'backslidder' but knows of a church he can go to that his sister attends. Another man named Lanel was at the beach with a large group from "the village" which is a rehab (recovering from drug or alcohol addictions). He has been sober for seven months but says its very hard. He also said he does not regularly attend a church. God is so faithful in granting opportunities to speak words of encouragement and hope into people lives...if only for a few moments. One other man was from the US, lived in Hawaii a while and is now here on business. We talked alot about hypocrisy in the church and what it looks like to take God 'serious' to the point of being a missionary for life. He has visited a few churches on the island and knows the pastor's wife at our main church (St Croix Christian) but he doesn't feel comfortable there either. Its so sad to see so many people hurting and yet even when the reach out (for example to a drug rehab program) they are just meeting the surface needs, not the deeper God shaped hole in their souls. SO CLOSE YET SO FAR!! I pray that my words caused their hearts to stir and that the Holy Spirit draws them nearer to Him, for a personal relationship not just a traditional visit to church/religion.
As far as life we are starting our kids programs so things are busy. We've accepted a few applicants for the fall DTS and I personally am getting so excited to start meeting them and begin discipling. We've done a few 'strategic planning' meetings and delegated some other base responsibilities so those keep us busy also.
One of my prayer requests is to find my balance....not some new age 'mind soul body' balance but rather a balance regarding faithfully supporting the base and the work God has for me between these walls to bless and serve, and also the urgency/passion to meet the people on the streets and minister to those who haven't felt the peace of God in their lives. Right now the base has a need for more staff to cover areas such as grounds, kitchen, admin that can release others to full time pursue a vision of outreach. They can both be done but I haven't figured out how yet...
My other prayer request is still for a car. Im hearing many opportunities to volunteer and having my own transportation would make this an option. I would also be able to visit and connect with churches all over the island (taxis could run up to fifteen dollars or more one way).
Also praying for Jericho kids the next two weeks. Its a half day camp open to any child in the community and right now we have at least 30 signed up with more expected-praise God!
Praying in more children for our Kings Kids the last two weeks of July. We are running into a hesitancy with locals because it is an overnight camp and this is something that is not common on the islands. Please pray God moves mightily and brings in kids to be discipled.

Outreach week

The boys TJ, Kyle and Josh taking a quick rest.....or maybe impatiently waiting for the next move.

Well we have just been handed our final exam- we have the entire week to finish it and it's open book so I am not too concerned about it! This week was our outreach week and it was fantastic. I am amazed at how much each one of us was able to hear from the Lord. Its incredible to be in a large group and to have people receive the same message. We also had numerous times while we were in smaller groups, that members of the different groups would get something similar that validated what the other had. One morning we wrote out all the things God was saying- images, words, verses etc... and during the next two days all of them except for two had been seen or done. (examples include Red door, Joy-child, ruins etc) We also hosted a half day for kids in the community where they got to swim and have fun. We did a pizza night for some of the local basketball guys last night. We also did quite a bit of evangelism in Fredricksted and also a town called Mon Bijou.

The theme of being stones in rebuilding the ruins came up numerous times. One that I was involved in that was particularly exciting was following a vision that one of us had about an old lady in a mansion on a hill. Here in St Croix there is a 'castle' on a hill owned by a countessa from Bulgaria. It seems she now is moving into her more permanent place in Long Island but that was a series of hints, leads, seeking out (literally going into restaurants and asking for info on her) and a lot of intercession for her , hearing Gods heart for her. Will we ever make contact? Who knows.... I think the point is that God is actively seeking her out and wants to overflow her with the love of God,that he hears her disappointments and cares about an intimate relationship with her. For the group this was so moving. It was also incredible (and a bit unnerving) to hear directly from God and to see fruit and pieces of the puzzle come together. We are waiting on our next step. I was feeling the word pink at the beginning of the week so this whole week Ive been looking for a pink mansion or house, thinking maybe there was another old lady who needs prayer. Then I found out that this Contessa (Nadia Farber) has a PINK MANSION in Long Island.... Its been crazy and I don't think any of us in the group has been on a 'chase' like that before... Its nice feeling like we aren't in the drivers seat-God is!
Another highlight has been visiting Neil at the bakery that he owns in Fredricksted. A while ago another team that was here helped him open his business, painting etc. We felt to stop in a pray for him and he was so excited cause he just changed the name of his place to Bread of Life and moving in a direction to be passionate about pursuing God and his values. He is also going through a tough time in his family so we prayed for him. God also was preparing his coworkers heart as he has been involved with a lady named 'Mrs Padilla' (she is the older lady in the next picture talking to one of the local homeless guys) who is interested in donating her property to be made into a shelter/food pantry/bible study area.

This guy, Leroy (or LAM-white hat next picture)...is heading it and has a vision for it. We went there and prayed for the building and met Mrs Padilla- we may have opportunity to partner with them. Again it was a series of 'God things' and we walked away excited (by the way - the bakery has a bright red door- one of the visions earlier this week).
We ended this week with a Skype (video phone on the computer) session with Darlene Cunningham, founder of Youth with a Mission. She encouraged us to press in and repeatedly spoke on increasing the measure of our faith. Her sharing was so rich I'm sure we will all take time to go back into it and dive into the scriptures she used. Last week I was able to volunteer with a local group (women's coalition) preparing for their annual race and was honored to meet so many ladies from the community. I hope to continue to do one time volunteer things like that again. I will try to update my blog more often as there is so much packed into one week to share. Unfortunately that also means less time to be able to connect on the internet! One more week of Equip - here I come!

Poor Camera

This is what I see out my window
I do not know what kind of bird this is but he has come to visit the last couple of days.....
Those were my last two pictures on my camera....

Poor camera.... as of right now it refuses to turn on (yes, Ive changed the batteries a couple of times).... "Dear Jesus, Please bless me with a camera so I can keep my loved ones updated on what I am seeing and doing... and because I like photography. AMEN"

This was another full week of teaching including looking at Crisis examples, how to lead a small group, outreach tips etc..... We had Jeff Wilke (main speaker) from the Montana YWAM base here as well as Kim Hunt (more pastoral support). Both were so full of stories and inspiration and we truly felt blessed by them. Jeremy also spoke on a few topics and with only two weeks left of leadership training we are drinking in all the info we can. This coming week is our 'outreach' week and as we've been praying God is giving some clear directions and messages that seem to be not just for our immediate team but for ongoing ministry on the island. One of the main outreaches next week will probably be inviting the local boys in for a basketball night and treating them to pizza (with testimony time). I am reading a book called 'Repenting of Religion' by Greg Boyd as one of my book reviews and while the general themes and some great examples are good, I don't agree with his open theism. I'm already getting sentimental at the thought of my beloved new friends going back to their home bases. The best way to learn is from each other.

One of my fun highlights from this week was Pier jumping. A bunch of us (lead by my director) went to Fredricksted pier one night and after watching a few of the boys jump in I was surprised by my own impulse to follow them. The water may be clear but we'd already spotted huge fish (maybe even longer than my arm but any fish longer than my hand gives me the hesitations), and also sea turtles. When we first stepped on the pier the natives were talking about the sharks they had caught off the end of the pier. So to the more logical person, pier jumping at night would not be an option. I did not have on the 'logical' hat that night and even without a swim suit I jumped in! The water was warmer than the outside air and it was so worth it. Just to say I have! And don't worry, I did not feel any nibbles on my toes (by the way, I was the FIRST one up the ladder).....

This weekend a group is going to Carambola beach/resort (there are tide pools there too) but unfortunately it does not look like I can join them. Ive already to committed to helping out with the local Women Coalitions' 25th Annual Race that runs on Sunday (prep time is on Saturday during the beach outing). What a bummer!!! I know God will have me be in the 'best' spot but sun and fellowship sure sounded nice.... Meeting new people will be fun though! I might be able to update a bit more this week (outreach week). You can be praying for my school leader's daughter, Eden, as she has been running a fever, ear infections and some nasty bug bites (she is only 1.5 years old)....

End of May

(Director Viola on a Fredricksted beach)
This is my reflections from the past week of teachings and just God teaching.... Im learning the importance of a teachable spirit. I'd rather work with someone with little experience yet a teachable spirit than someone with all the experience but no motivation for change.
-Four steps to leadership (found in Jesus example with the disciples): Directing (telling what to do and assess -as one adult to another adult ), Coaching (explaining the why), Supporting (physically absent but still in charge-as seen in sending disciples out two by two and then debriefing), Delegating (give full authority)
-Your self control to speak the right thing at the right time needs to be guarded by rest
- A great leader will simplify things
- Are we taking our bubbles onto the missionary field to avoid discomforts (ipods, laptops etc)
- Peter had two conversions. The first was to Jesus. The second was a cultural awareness (acts 9 and 10)
- Leadership is presence (the importance of delegation)
- It takes character to choose the right choice. It takes self awareness to realize it's cost.
- Immaturity is being a victim to your personality type.
- Preaching, teaching are both introverting professions

Here is my prayer/financial update letter:
Greetings from YWAM St Croix,
I am now halfway through my Equip Leadership training and loving every minute of it. Sarah Lanier was our speaker this week and did a fantastic job of teaching us different communication styles, personality styles, culture outlines etc..... I am beginning to see a better vision of my time here on St Croix base and have been busy getting ready for Kings Kids this summer (we have a two week summer camp with locals called Jericho Kids and then two weeks overnight camp with Kings Kids including hosting 60kids from Puerto Rico).
After some lengthy team brainstorming Ive been asked to join the administration side of the base to help support the base director's wife. I will be considering this in prayer and would appreciate your prayers also. This also brings up the need to purchase a laptop computer so I am placing that on my financial needs list....
I am also seeing a need to have my own vehicle as getting around the island is not easy. I can take a taxi to Christiansted and Fredricksted (for 2.50 each way) however any location that is not on this route runs quite high. I hope to be able to look into this so that I can better connect with the community and do some volunteering as well as connecting with the variety of churches on the island (I should be able to find an 'island car' for around 2000$).
Please be praying for God to bless in each of these areas, give continued discernment as well as financial provisions for each of these things. If you feel you can contribute financially please let me know.
Thank you for your support! ~Alissa

Saturday

In Fredricksted. Funny how God brings up things that Im learning. I had a friend email with some heartaches over church leadership and I was able to share what Ive been learning about Servant Leadership etc.... When you spend the day at the beach and see how intricate God's creation, I can't help but wonder why we make things so difficult. Why can't we see the 'big picture' at all times? ..... Not really looking for answers, just talking out loud...

Classroom Time

How can I possibly be behind in reading when it's only my second week of class!!This was another week packed full of rich lessons. Jeremy and Molly West were the speakers and each time we dig a little deeper. This is our classroom, held in the 'Great room' here on YWAM ST Croix base. Im in the blue shirt on the left in the front row. Probably the ONLY time I sat in the front row...HA. YWAM St Croix will be hosting the outreach phase of Kings Kids from Puerto Rico in August so we have had some meetings about preparations for that. More news to come (when I don't have to rush and make dinner for thirty people)....

On a personal note....

A bit more insight into some of the things God is bringing up this week involves some addressing of my time in Samoa and some abuse of power held by a few of the leaders. 'Spiritual abuse' is a tricky subject and while I won't go into detail, God has been faithful to point out a few of the battle wounds that remain, including not having a voice. My heart is again breaking for those who were hurt during these times and I have a written a few letters asking forgiveness for not having done more to prevent the breaking down and abusive ways the islanders (and Jenn and I) were treated. I acknowledge that I carry a guilt, or responsibility, that is not mine to carry and this is something I will be working on. I am praying that the distorted example of the Body of Christ will be replaced with truth in the lives of those who exited those times. I cannot plead the excuse of culture or ignorance. Being also under the same leadership does not excuse me from not standing up for them further, or sooner. My leaders here absolutely have a heart for seeing YWAM St Croix be a place for healing, and growing and I know I am in fertile soil for this. I am practicing trusting leadership again, although at times difficult. The bottom line is that my trust rests not in man, but rather in God working through men. I know this will continue to be a journey and God has been very directly speaking and I pray He continues to do so....

Day in Christiansted

Some island artwork
Marti, volunteer with YWAM from Montana base, and myself on our little outing to Christiansted

There was a march/rally for the youth against violence held in Christiansted today, Saturday. We happened to be in town. There also was a cruise ship in Fredricksted so the place was busy busy! The top is a photo of a local high school group singing (where is the love) and the bottom is another picture of the rally

Words of Wisdom for First week of training

Ive finished up the first week of 'Equip',my leadership training course. I am blown away at how many deep personal issues have come up and am so thankful to God that He has left us with a Holy Spirit that counsels , convicts, and speaks on our behalf. Ive been told that this is a time of preparation for something 'larger' and am excited, despite the messyness of growing. The following are just some of the words of wisdom from this week. Ill write a few more personal notes on the next blog.
-Being a disciple is a lack of identity in self
- "Its easy to be a servant until you start being treated like one"
-All good leaders know how to follow-not all followers are leaders.
- Live a redeemed life, instead of trying to redeem it
- It is not sin that humbles us most, but grace (andrew murray)
- Six roots in your life: family, significant relationships, culture, generation, life events and authority
- 70% of churched youth believe there are no absolute truths
- Leaders are the tip of the spear of people
-Structure is good, it builds security
- If you know where you started and where you are going, you can then know where you are at present
-good coaching is ongoing (instruct.demonstrate, release, evaluate.instrust, release)

This week also included a time of intercession and renouncing past slavery. We had Mark, our director , and Sharon, an Equip staff, repent and ask for forgiveness from each other (Mark is white and Sharon is from St Lucia). It was an emotional time for all of us and we pray a break in the spiritual strongholds around this area.
On Friday we discussed the area of purity as well as a strong focus on accountability as leaders. For the purity portion we broke out in one half the room men, and the other half women and called out the descriptive words used in Song of Songs towards each other (beloved etc...) It was fun but powerful at the same time. Each new day brings exciting revelation and many areas of direct application. To even begin to write them all down would take me forever!

Dani and I took a quick trip down to Christiansted to walk around, see the shops. It really wasn't very busy , maybe because its Mother's Day weekend. Most of the town isn't really moving until 10am. We got dropped off near the Fort and it's a nice little town. Open market is on Saturdays. Most people were friendly and helpful. Top picture is just me being silly. My heart did go out to a few of the people, mainly men, who seemed to homeless, or just managing. One man was even just sitting on the step, rocking and sucking his thumb. There were some beautiful pieces of artwork including pictures and ceramics. It was a nice treat to end the week. Yesterday was my last 5am morning day and then it was work day, cleaning mainly. Most of us took a dip in the pool around 3pm when our day was done. Went to the grocery store last night and then watched a few movies (yes, two movies, what a way to veg out!). I received a 'welcome' package to the Equip training and most of the students are coming in today. I think last I heard 14 people were signed up. Ive opted to stay living in the trailer instead of moving over to the cabins. Here are a few more pictures from our time in Christiansted....

Notice the beach in the background, Protestant Cay. Its a small island that you take a quick ferry to (in fact it almost looks like you could swim it).
